Churchill Society Outreach

By Megan Harris

Volume 17 Issue 1 Spring 2005

In 2004, the Society introduced a luncheon speaker series to compliment its efforts to increase discussion of parliamentary democracy and to generate awareness of the Society beyond its existing membership base.  This outreach initiative has helped to spark awareness in topical public policy issues and has introduced many people to the Churchill Society for the Advancement of Parliamentary Democracy and its many good works.

In the Fall of 2004, we were fortunate to have Peter MacKay, the M.P. for Pictou-Antigonish-Guysborough in Nova Scotia, and the Deputy Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.  Peter shared his experiences and insight on the challenges facing a parliamentary democracy during a minority parliament.  I am sure his thoughts are as topical today, as they were when he joined us for this outreach luncheon.

In the Spring of 2005, the former “Dean” of Queen’s Park shared his insights on the pressing issues of parliamentary tradition and reform with members of the Society and the University Club.  Sean Conway served as Liberal M.P.P. from the Renfrew area for many years, and served in the cabinet of Premier Peterson.  He was widely regarded by all sides of the provincial legislature as a passionate parliamentarian and one of the more effective debaters at Queen’s Park.

These events showcase the themes of the Society and are intended to provide a stimulating luncheon experience with the ability for members, and guests, to network and engage in pressing issues of the day.  I hope you can join us at the next luncheon.

Editor’s Note: Many thanks to Megan for her hard work in making this new series such a success!
