Matthews: The 2005 Churchill Society Dinner Speaker
By John Plumpton
Volume 17 Issue 1 Spring 2005
Chris Matthews is one of the most
recognized and respected political analysts and journalists in the
United States. He is the
host of MSNBC’s flagship political affairs program, “Hardball with
Chris Matthews”, and is MSNBC anchor for all major political events.
He was recently in Rome for the funeral of Pope John Paul II.
He is host of The Chris Matthews Show, broadcast on NBC
immediately after Meet the Press on Sunday mornings.
Matthews has
covered history as it has unfolded in the last few decades, most notably
at the opening of the Berlin Wall, the first open elections in South
Africa and the historic peace referendum in Northern Ireland and the
Republic of Ireland. His
remarkable depth and breadth of experience has been gained from 15 years
in politics and government working for President Jimmy Carter, Senator
Frank Moss, Senator Edmund Muskie and Speaker of the House Thomas P.
“Tip” O’Neill, as well as his 13 years as Washington Bureau Chief
for the San Francisco Examiner. He
is the author of several best selling books, including America:
Beyond Our Grandest Notions (2002), a New York Times best seller, Kennedy and Nixon (1996), and, of course, Hardball (1988).
Chris Matthews
is an active supporter of The Churchill Centre in the United States and
delivered the 1st Annual Churchill Lecture at George
Washington University in Washington, DC.
He has been an ardent supporter of Churchillian organizations and
has published several articles exploring Churchill's leadership and
political skills. Currently,
he is working on a book examining 'Churchill Rules' that can be used to
guide the present generation of world leaders.
Chris Matthews is in great demand as a speaker throughout North
America, and we are greatly honoured to have him accept our invitation
and join us in Toronto this coming November.
