Award for Excellence in the Cause of Parliamentary Democracy

Right Honourable Kim Campbell P.C., C.C., Q.C.

This year the Churchill Society recognizes the importance of leadership of women in our political system by honouring with its Annual Award for Excellence in the Cause of Parliamentary Democracy the Right Honourable Kim Campbell, Canada’s nineteenth and first and only female Prime Minister.  Ms. Campbell served in cabinet portfolios as Minister of State for Indian Affairs and Northern Development (1989-1993), Minister of Justice (1990-1993) and Minister of National Defence (1993).  She was the first woman to hold the Justice and Defence portfolios and the first woman to be Defence Minister of a NATO country.

After her tenure as Prime Minister, Ms. Campbell served as Canadian Consul-General in Los Angeles from 1996-2000.  In 2001 she became a Fellow at the Center for Public Leadership at the Kennedy School at Harvard.  She served as Chair of the Council of Women World Leaders from 1999-2003 and President of the International Women’s Forum from 2003-2005. She served as Secretary-General of the Club of Madrid, a prominent world organization of former heads of government and state who work to promote democratization though relations with leaders of transitional democracies from 2004 to 2006.  She remains an active member of the Board of Directors.  Among her many current activities, she is Chair of the Board of Trustees of the newly formed Foundation for Effective Governance.

Kim Campbell was educated at the University of British Columbia and the London School of Economics.  She holds seven honorary doctorates and is the author of the best-selling Time and Chance, of which the 3rd updated edition was released in May 2008.  In July 2008 Ms. Campbell was made a Companion of the Order of Canada.

Keynote Speaker

Honourable Celia Sandys

In this 25th Anniversary year, the Society welcomes back one of its Honorary Patrons, the Honourable Celia Sandys, to represent the Churchill family at its gala dinner.  Ms Sandys is the daughter of Sir Winston Churchill’s eldest daughter Diana and Cabinet Minister Duncan Sandys. She is an internationally acclaimed journalist, television presenter and speaker. She has published five books on various aspects of her grandfather’s life and career.  Her most recent book We Shall Not Fail—The Inspiring Leadership of Winston Churchill describes the principles of her grandfather’s leadership.

Her book Chasing Churchill, about the travels of Sir Winston includes reminiscences of her own journeys with her grandparents, has been adapted into a highly acclaimed three-part television series broadcast in July and August 2008.  Her other works are Churchill Wanted Dead or Alive, Churchill: A Short Biography and From Winston with Love and Kisses: The Young Churchill.

Ms. Sandys is on the Board of Governors with The Churchill Centre with which the Churchill Society became associated as an ally in 2007. She is a popular public speaker and leader of public tours retracing her grandfather’s travels including Morrocco in October 2008.  Ms. Sandys is intimately familiar with the important role of her grandmother Clementine in Sir Winston’s career and will be speaking about the influence of women in Churchill’s life and career.
